At my practice, I offer equine therapy to veterans and their dependents through a partnership with a non-profit organization. The program is supported by a grant that covers the cost of 12 therapy sessions with myself, an equine (horse), and an equine specialist who accompanies us during sessions. This program is offered at no cost to veterans and their dependents, making it an accessible option for those who may not have the financial means to pursue other forms of therapy.
Equine therapy is an innovative and effective way to help veterans and their dependents process past traumas and improve their mental health. Equine therapy is conducted on the ground, so no riding experience is required. Horses are sensitive animals and have a unique ability to respond to our emotional cues, often before we are aware of them ourselves. When I am working with a veteran during an equine therapy session, the horse may exhibit certain behaviors or act in a particular way that signals to me that something is going on internally for the veteran. It’s almost like an x-ray machine for emotions; the horse can detect things that the client may not be able or willing to verbalize.
Our Success [JOURNEY] We Can Provide.
The benefits of equine therapy for veterans and their dependents are numerous. It can help increase emotional awareness and regulation, reduce stress, improve communication and social skills, and provide a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. Through equine therapy, veterans can build a sense of trust and connection with the horse, which can translate to their relationships with others.
The equine specialist who accompanies me during sessions is there for safety and to translate the horse’s body language. While the specialist does not participate in the therapy itself, they help ensure that the session is safe and that the horse is behaving appropriately.
I have seen the transformative impact of equine therapy for veterans and their dependents, and I am honored to be able to offer this program to those who have served our country. If you are a veteran or the dependent of a veteran and would like to explore equine therapy as an option for mental health support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me to schedule an appointment.
